| This web site has been established and is managed by Bakhtiar Dargali, a Kurdish-American writer living in Texas. It is dedicated to the friendship between the Kurdish nation and the American people. The mission of this Site is to serve and promote the noble cause of Kurdistan. Ekurd.org will highlight the Kurdish people's just struggle and expose the inhumane nature of the regimes that occupy, oppress, and plunder Kurdistan. A credible solution to the Kurdish people's struggle for self-determination (including the right to set-up an independent Kurdistan) is THE prerequisite for a stable and democratic Middle East. Peace will be elusive for the Kurdish nation's oppressors until Sarbasty (freedom) makes Kurdistan her home. |

I am privileged and honored to be given this opportunity to address members of such distinguished organization as the Rotary Club. The great accomplishments and vital humanitarian tasks that are the hallmarks of this almost 100-year-old organization have always impressed me. I salute all the 1.2 millions of the 31,000 Rotary Clubs thought the world for their efforts in helping to eradicate the polio and for their spirit of service, high ethical standards, and promotion of goodwill and understanding amongst peoples and nations of the world.
Dear Friends: I am an American citizen but I am also a Kurd. A Kurd! Who are the Kurds? The Kurds are an Indo-European people that have lived in their present habitat for more than 4,000 years. The Kurdish people number close to 40 million people and their homeland, called Kurdistan, is divided amongst four nations of the Middle East, namely: Iraq, Turkey, Iran, and Syria.
Kurdish people's right of self-determination is not respected in none of the countries that I mentioned. All four countries have tried to assimilate Kurds and make them Turks, Arabs, and Persians. They have failed miserably.
President George W. Bush has rightfully called the
freedom "God's gift to humanity".
The enemies of humanity have answered Kurdish people's calls for freedom with
oppression, killings, genocidal wars, and chemicals weapons attacks.
I was born in the Iraqi part of Kurdistan. I know first hand the brutality and evilness of Saddam Hussein and his fallen criminal regime. Many family and many others were living in the caves to escape Saddam's attacks on the Kurdish people. In 1969, the attacks of Saddam's regime on the Kurds were so severe that we had lost track of time. On that year, the Christmas had passed by 10 days and we did not know that thet joyful occasion had come and gone. It was the same time that I saw my uncle, his wife, and his daughter being blown up by Iraqi army fighters.
I was the lucky one. I was able to escape the hell of Iraq and left Kurdistan in 1975. Saddam Hussein later became even more evil and criminal. In the late eighties, Saddam developed and used (that is right my friends used) weapons of mass destruction, namely chemical weapons, in Kurdistan on a wide scale. In the spring of 1987, the Khosnawatey area of Arbil province was the scene Saddam's chemical weapons carnage. One village, Shekh Wasanan, which had more than 1,000 people, was wiped by Saddam's chemical attacks. I have a very god friend in Dallas who has lost more than 50 of his closet relatives in a village nearby which faced a similar attack
Perhaps the best-known evidence of Saddam's chemical weapons usage is Halabja. Halabja is a small town in the Slemany province. It had a population of 100,000 people when it was attacked by Iraq on a beautiful spring day in March of 1988. More than 5,000 Kurds died instantly. Many more died slowly with pains and effects of those devilish weapons (chemical weapons) that were gifts from a satanic leader known as Saddam Hussein to the Kurdish people.
The Kurdish people are surprised and amazed when they say no weapons of mass destruction have been found in Iraq. The biggest such weapon is Saddam Hussein and he been found. Saddam had plans to develop more weapons of mass destruction. He already not had them but also used them what he had. Had Saddam been allowed to continue his reign of terror and development of chemical weapons, the threat of nuclear, biological, and chemical terror would have been real in America. I have no doubt that Saddam would have given those weapons to terrorists who would not hesitate for one moment to use them against Americans.
I strongly support the war on terror. Iraq war is a war on terror. It is better for America to fight the terrorists in Haifa Street in Baghdad than Commerce Street in Dallas, Texas. Terror groups are the biggest threat to the security of America and America's prosperity. America cannot be a passive observer as terror groups as they try to take over the Middle East and the Muslim world. Terrorism is cancerous disease and it needs to eradicated.
The war in Iraq needs to refocus America's attention
on which her friends and enemies are. 40 million Kurdish people in the Middle
East support America's war on terror. The 7 million Kurdish people in the
Iraqi part of Kurdistan were and still are the staunchest ally of America
and America's forces in the region. In the Kurdish area of Iraq (which comprises
of 1/3 of Iraq), not a single American soldier has been killed or wounded
there. When the war on Saddam started in the spring of last year, Kurdish
soldiers fought side by side with American forces against the Saddam's army.

Yes for Kurdistan....No to occupiers!
| The Epic of Handren and the story of the heroes of Kurdistan in the Spring of 1966 In the Spring of 1966, the majestic mountain of Handren, located in the Iraqi occupied part of Kurdistan and overlooking the historic Kurdish town of Rawanduz, was the scence of one of the greatest military battles in the history of Kurdistan. On May 2, 1966, Iraqi army began a massive campaign to dislodge a small number of Kurdish peshmerga fighters guarding Handren. The Iraqis succeeded in occupying the highest peak of Handren known as Kapkamoo. On May 12, 1966, 200 Kurdish fighters started a glorious counter attack to retake Handren from the filthy presence of the criminal Iraqi army. In less than 4 hours, the heros of Kurdistan wiped out an entire Iraqi brigade, destroyed 200 bunkers of the occupiers, and freed the whole mountain from the Iraqi occupation viruses in Kurdistan: Iraqi army. The price of this glorious victory was the martyrdom of three of Kurdistan's best sons: 1- Salih Mam Alyas (from Rawanduz) 2- Hareef Younus (from Hawler city) 3- Kheder Hawla Bag (from Dargala). Then came the Congratulatory message from the lion of Kurdistan, Mustafa Barzani, who hailed this grand victory and praised the peshmerga fighters: From: Mustafa Barzani
